The first spin-off series of Marvel Comics' long-running GI JOE: A REAL AMERICAN HERO, GI JOE: Special Missions, also written by Larry Hama with pencils by Herb Trimpe, exploded onto the scene in 1986 after being introduced in Issue #50 of ARAH. Unlike the continuing narrative of ARAH, however, Special Missions' storytelling would be more tightly focused, with most issues being "done-in-one" adventures that never involved COBRA and which were separate from the main series.
This, of course, was the whole purpose of GI JOE: Special Missions. On the one hand, the series still had to serve the the greater goal of Marvel's work on GI JOE -- to promote and sell it's client Hasbro's action figures and toy vehicles. To this end, Hama could keep better pace with Hasbro's production of new GI JOE action figures by more easily introducing them as new characters in Special Missions. On the other hand, Special Missions was Hama's opportunity to breathe, to tell more involved stories that were "deeper" than those in ARAH, many of them involving, to the extend possible, political themes and the realities of a soldier's life during wartime.
Less sensational and more realistic and thus mature, GI JOE Special Missions enjoyed a 28-issue run before it concluded in November, 1989. Give your collection what it deserves...today!
