In Greek tradition, the sphinx "To Squeeze" is a treacherous and merciless being with the head of a woman, the haunches of a lion, and the wings of a bird. According to Greek myth, she challenges those who encounter her to answer a riddle, and kills and eats them when they fail to do so. The riddle involved went like this, " what animal is that which in the morning goes on four feet, at noon on two, and in the evening upon three?" Those who couldn't answer became a snack for the Sphnix. But as fortune would strike Oedipus took up the challenge and went to mount Phicium to encounter the sphinx. Ta Da, Oedipus when asked the question immediately if not sooner answered " Man". As you know, ,a man in his childhood would move on hands and knees (four feet), during adulthood would walk on two feet, and in old age would make use of a cane or staff as a third foot. So as soon as the Sphinx heard the good news it threw itself off the breathtakingly high mountainside and hit a beautiful piece of Greek marble full force and was dispatched back into the heavens, waiting, waiting, waiting. so all is now safe thanks to our hero Oedipus. No really!!
