MICHAEL HOLT a.k.a. DC's second hero to claim the mantle of MISTER TERRIFIC is one of the smartest characters in the DCU and one of the earliest teased DC characters by new DC Studios Creative Head, JAMES GUNN. Terrific's longtime association with the JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA as a Legacy character, his service in AMANDA WALLER's clandestine organization known as CHECKMATE, his ties to the JUSTICE LEAGUE and having received his very own FIRST SOLO SERIES in 2011 as part of the DC Comics The New 52 initiative all contribute to his position as a very solid, well-rounded character with a considerable stable of source material.
But Terrific wasn't the only character Gunn had been teasing, and the veracity of Gunn's teases relative to his new position at DC had yet to be put to the test. Fandom remained uncertain, even as Gunn upped the ante a bit by expanding his tease to include Mister Terrific's own super-team, the appropriately named TERRIFICS, that debuted in their own title in 2018. Modeled in good humor after Marvel's Fantastic Four, a super-team that itself is coming to the Big Screen in Marvel Studios' Phase 6, there now seemed to be some logic behind those teases. Or was there?
The answer - a resounding "Yes" - was announced in early July 2023, when the first round of casting for Gunn's first new DC film -- Superman: Legacy -- was completed. Along with SUPERMAN and LOIS LANE, Gunn shared the news that four never-seen-on-screen DC heroes would also be part of the film's cast and that Mister Terrific was one of them. Truly great news, but even better was that fact that Gunn once again proved, as he always had during his tenure at Marvel Studios, to be a truly respectable creator and a man whose word was a solid as his filmmaking.
