From colonial times through the Civil War, metal
was an expensive and often scarce commodity.
As a result, metal manufacturers used tin as an alternative for making tools, lighting, kitchen utensils, toys and even decorative objects. This collection of
tin household items contains several 19th and some early 20th
century examples. It consists
of a candle mold, grater, strainer, cookie cutters, toy horn, fish mold
and corn dryers. There are 18 pieces; sizes vary from the 19 in. corn ear dryers to a 12 in. strainer (including handles) and a heart shape cookie
cutter (1 ½ in.). Expected toning of
metal on all, some rusting started on strainer, a couple of cookie cutter
handles repaired.
