Wide open and gloriously unrestrained, the new Jet Black packs a visceral gut punch. It feels big yet it’s still agile, responsive and dynamic – you’re in complete control, using nothing more than your pick attack and the volume control on your guitar.
The straightforward design features 38 watts through a quartet of EL84s, two channels, tremolo, and reverb. Each of the two channels features a unique input volume control and a master volume control, so you can cover loads of dynamic range without disturbing the peace.
As with every new Bad Cat, you get a buffered and transparent FX Loop, meaning zero drama when connecting your beloved effects. A line out means making use of external IRs or re-amping a snap, and there’s a full complement of speaker outputs to choose from. Finally, we’ve included a compact two button footswitch to switch the tremolo on/off and change amp channels.
What Do We Think
This amp does indeed live on the wild side! That’s not to say it can’t be tamed, but it’s ready to deliver some tones that most amps will never take you to.
From an EQ perspective it leans classic BadCat or Matchless. Vox chime is available in spades. It has spank and a tight bottom end that just loves a Strat, while sitting equally well under a pair of humbuckers. The mid control takes a powerful approach that allows you to alter the character of the amp from tight and scooped to moodier and more saggy with just the turn of a single control.
This amp can be dialed up for either a clean channel/dirty channel rig, or for classic breakup on channel 1 and extra dirt on channel 2. It covers a wide spectrum that will handle nearly any need you can throw at it. Channel 1 is big and blooming. Channel 2 is a bit more focused, allowing heavier tones to cut where they need to.
The tremolo circuit goes from subtle warble to crisp staccato depending on the intensity and speed, sounding lush all the way. The reverb begs to be dialed in as the icing on the cake. A little goes a long way, as this amp doesn’t require any “covering up.” As you turn it up, you get a nice increase in the trail without an overwhelming attack.
