"A Map of the Countries Thirty Degrees Round the North Pole." A full-page sheet map of the Arctic Regions, with the imprint at the bottom "London. Published March 1st 1799 by GG & I Robinson Paternoster Row."
The map was engraved for Clement Crutwell's 'Gazetteer.'

An interesting map of the Northern Polar Regions at a time when much of North America remained unexplored. Baffins Bay is drawn as completely closed, and the details to the west are even more vague. Apart from a vague bit of coastline entering diagonally from 'Bherings Strait', there is little information. The odd scrap from previous expeditions (such as Hearn) is noted: 'Fresh Water'; 'Ice extending fr Cont. to Cont.'; and details of the Native Indians found there, such as Copper, Dog Ribb'd, and Hare. The Sea was spotted north of the Coppermine River in 1772, and features like the Snowy Mountains are marked. But clearly there was much left to be explored, and it would take over 100 years to get to the North Pole, and through the NW Passage.

In contrast, the area to the north of Russia etc. had been explored in more detail. The most northerly point marked on the map is Purchase Point, Spitzbergen, which lies just inside the 30 degree latitude.

Size: the sheet measures 49cms x 39cms.
Condition: The map has undergone some restoration work which is just visible at the bottom, seemingly not affecting the map itself. It is now in a good condition, with attractive original handcolouring, and it has been laid down on archival paper. Suitable for framing. Please study my photographs.

Postage: the map will be sent flat packed. £7.00 within the UK. £14.00 to Europe, £25.00 to USA etc.
