The 7.62x39 cartridge, developed in 1943 by Nikolai Mikhailovich Elizarov and Boris Vladimirovich Semin, is one of the most widely used ammunitions worldwide since World War II. Initially used in the SKS rifle, it is a medium-powered cartridge with a low production cost. Despite the introduction of the 5.45x39mm cartridge with greater muzzle velocity and range, the 7.62x39 remains the most widespread ammunition type. It served as the primary cartridge for the Soviet Union until the arrival of the 5.45x39mm.
This versatile cartridge was not exclusive to the legendary AK-47 Kalashnikov rifle but was designed for various weapons, including the RPK machine gun and RPD Degtyaryov machine gun, used by both the Soviet Union and allied nations. The lacquered steel casing version was adopted to save on non-ferrous metals, allowing mass production at a minimal cost, contributing to the popularity of firearms utilizing this ammunition.
Today, cartridges of this caliber are increasingly popular for hunting and sports.
Cartridge Loading and Construction:
Military cartridges feature slower-burning powder and are often fully loaded. Older series may have faster, aged powder, making them more powerful than new ones.
