A genuine antique First Edition Geological Survey map titled top right "No. LXXVIII (Bangor)."
The area bordering on Snowdonia, with the tip of Anglesey in the top left hand corner.

A superb example of a handcoloured geological map, a complex area requiring precise colouring. The gold lodes are of particular note.
Geological maps were handcoloured into the 20th century, though the need lessened as colour printing improved. This example is dated in print bottom left "Geological information published March 1852." The faint embossed Geological Survey stamp at the top suggests the map was prepared in 1861, making this a genuinely very early example (the stamp is faint, but "186?" is clear, and I think the last figure is "1"). There is another embossed stamp to the right which I cannot read (see photo).

The geological series information is coloured onto an Old Series (i.e. 1st edition) Ordnance Survey map dated bottom right 1841. The map itself is full of interesting historical detail.

In my opinion, these early handcoloured geological maps are among the most remarkable cartographical items ever produced.

I am also selling a folding geological map that includes Snowdon itself. Please see my other items.

Size: the sheet measures 55cms x 43cms.
Condition: A little grubby in the margins, with one or two small tears along the top, but the map itself is in a good condition.
