USB microphone function for direct recording to a computer

Equipped with a USB audio interface function, this unit can be used as a USB microphone for direct audio input to a computer.

Precise waveform editing and high quality equalization/dynamics processing allow you to finish your recording data to the level of a work of art.

In addition, the MS Decoder plug-in, which converts M/S signal data recorded with the H2n into stereo L/R signals, is available for free download from the ZOOM website.

By manipulating the MID/SIDE faders, the stereo image can be controlled as desired.

A Must-Have for Field Recording

The H2n Handy Recorder is the only portable recorder with four recording modes: XY Stereo, MS Stereo, 2-Channel Surround, and 4-Channel Surround. It also has a built-in auto gain control, compressor and limiter, low-cut filter, and MS decoder. Furthermore, by applying the latest firmware (Ver. 3.0), it can be used as a SPATIAL AUDIO (spatial audio) compatible USB microphone for Facebook VR live streaming and YouTube 360° video creation.

Supports a wide range of recording

The H2n is equipped with MS and XY stereo microphones and also has surround sound recording capabilities, making it ideal for a wide range of situations.

XY + MS Microphone

The H2n is equipped with two types of microphones: XY and MS (mid-side) microphones. These microphones can be used separately for XY stereo or MS stereo recording, and can also be combined for 2- or 4-channel surround recording.

MS Stereo

MS recording is an amazing technique that allows you to adjust the stereo spread after recording. Moreover, it is fully mono-compatible, making it useful for voice recording of movies, video productions, and TV programs.

MS microphones combine a unidirectional mid microphone to capture sound from the front and a bi-directional side microphone to capture sound from the left and right.

XY Stereo

XY recording is a technique that allows recording a wide stereo space while keeping the center localized sound image clear, making it ideal for all types of stereo recordings.

Surround Recording

The H2n combines XY and MS microphones to create surround recordings in which sound seems to approach not only from the front but also from all directions in 360°.

Spatial sound for VR video

The H2n, the only handheld recorder capable of 4-channel surround sound recording, can record "Spatial Audio" for 360°/VR videos by updating to the latest firmware Ver. 2.0.

The "Spatial Audio" mode in Ver. 2.0 can generate multi-track WAV files containing omni, left/right, and front/back tracks. These files can be incorporated into 360°/VR videos shot with GoPro Odyssey or Richo Theta, etc. and uploaded to YouTube to create more immersive video content where the sound image moves as the viewer's perspective shifts.

To play spatial audio, the YouTube Android app must be used on an Android device with version 4.2 or later.

In/Out

The H2n's line input is a 3.5mm stereo minijack specification, allowing for the input of two channels of microphone or line-level signals. It also supports 2.5V plug-in power, so an electret-type condenser microphone can be connected. The microphone gain can be manually adjusted for each input level using an analog-style volume. It also has a built-in 3-type auto gain function that can automatically optimize the recording level.

The line output is a 3.5mm mini-stereo jack with a dedicated volume control. Headphones can also be connected to this jack, making it ideal for monitoring input and recording levels during recording. A mono speaker is also built into the back of the unit, so you can check your recording immediately after recording without having to connect anything else.

The H2n's USB port can be used to transfer stereo mixes and other digital data to a computer, making it easy to transfer data to audio editing software. The USB port can also be used as a 2-in/2-out USB audio interface or USB microphone.

Pre-record function

An interview starts before you are ready to record... The conductor starts swinging his baton while you are checking cables... A performer gets in front of the camera earlier than scripted... All of these are nightmare moments for the recording staff.

With H2n, there are no such nightmares. With the pre-record function, the H2n always records in the background from 2 seconds* before you press the record button, so you can record those precious moments without missing a beat.

(*When 4CH Surround Mode/96kHz sampling is selected, recording starts 1 second before the button is pressed.

Auto Record Function

The auto-record function automatically starts recording when the input signal exceeds a set level. It also has a built-in auto-record stop function that automatically stops recording when the input signal falls below the set level.

Abundant Built-in Effects

If you want to further refine your recorded audio or solve any limitations or problems in your recording environment, the H2n's built-in effects are your strong allies.

Compressors and limiters can help even out volume variations, as can automatic volume controls. The biggest difference between the two is that the limiter suppresses levels more severely.

A low-cut filter allows you to cut the band below a set frequency. For example, it can cut out pop noise, microphone "blowing" due to wind, and other noises caused by low-frequency rumbles, such as resonance from a microphone stand.

It also has a built-in metronome and chromatic/guitar/bass tuner for tuning and practicing instruments. Furthermore, it is possible to loop playback, adjust the playback speed without changing the pitch, or change only the pitch without changing the playback speed, making it useful for phrase training.

File Formats

H2n supports two file formats, WAV and MP3. The main difference between the two is that WAV files are uncompressed, meaning that all recorded data is recorded without any thinning, while the H4n can record WAV files at 16/24-bit and 44.1, 48, and 96 kHz sampling rates, automatically time-stamped, and compliant with Broadcast WAV format (BWF). This is essential for synchronizing video and audio during post-production, especially when recorded simultaneously with video.

MP3, on the other hand, is a compressed format, recorded with unnecessary data cut off, and allows for a much smaller file size than the WAV format. This allows for easy uploading and downloading to the Internet. Also, MP3s have a disadvantage in terms of sound quality compared to the original sound depending on the compression ratio, but in most cases this is hardly noticeable.

The H2n can easily convert a WAV file to an MP3 file, or mix two stereo files of a 4-channel surround recording into one stereo file using the built-in mixer function to set the level and localization of each track.

Battery Life and Recording Time

The H2n operates on two AA batteries, either alkaline or rechargeable nickel metal hydride (NiMH). The battery life is actually over 20 hours even when using alkaline batteries and recording continuously. The H2n can also be powered from an electrical outlet with the optional AC adapter AD-17.

H2n recording data is recorded directly to an SD card. SD or SDHC cards can be used, with a maximum capacity of 32 GB. The table below summarizes the maximum recording time by SD/SDHC card capacity and recording file format.

Each recording time is a rough estimate. The maximum capacity of one file is 2 GB.

As a USB microphone

The USB audio interface function can be used as a USB microphone for direct audio input to a PC. Using commercially available software, music production and podcast program production can be easily started. The SD card reader function can also be used to transfer recorded files to a PC.
