Scarce! Vintage Laughlin Theme Eggshell Covered Vegetable Dish / Casserole 9-3/4 White Body with Flowers

Scarce Theme Eggshell TH-11 Pattern Covered Vegetable Dish / Covered Casserole / Serving Bowl / Decorative Centerpiece from Homer Laughlin Theme Eggshell line. The Theme Eggshell shape is modeled with the raised floral ring as part of the mold and common to have beautiful floral decals (such as this one) as part of the decorations.

This covered casserole/vegetable bowl holds over 1 quart or liter/2 pints/4 cups. The embossed pattern delicately graces the bowl rim and the lid rim. The handle on the lid is an embossed flower. Simple splendid!!

From the end of December to the end of January 1939, work was suspended on Theme while shapes were being created for Serenade. On January 29, 1939, with the majority of Serenade modeled, Rhead makes several notes on Theme. He states that the line is "going out minus the blue slip treatment." From then on, shapes are modeled with the raised floral ring as part of the mold. All previous models and samples were shelved and development resumed the first week of March 1939. The size and style of embossing that collectors know today was chosen at this time and work would continue on creating new shapes based on the wider relief into the first week of June 1939.

There was a point when it wasn't certain if it was to be of a regular body or in the light eggshell weight which was new at the time. On March 24, 1939, Rhead notes in his journals: G. Pittenger in. Asked if "Theme is to be in "Eggshell." Price lists are made out for Eggshell. Told him to see J.M. Wells who will be back today. Samples are in talc body and have been made light. Do not know definitely if the product is to be "Eggshell." All vintage Theme was made in the eggshell weight.

This covered casserole / serving bowl is from December 1939 as the bowl has the general HLC backstamp and date code - at the Newell plant per the marks on the bottom L39 N5.

Condition: Overall casserole is in very good to excellent vintage condition. No chips or cracks. Has some use / age staining on the rim of the dish. Decal is bright and vibrant. May have small factory production imperfections such as sand bumps, glaze skips, glaze pops, etc. Has a couple factory mold flaws on the underside of the piece, does not distract.
