This coin was minted between 220 and 119 BC during the Imperial Qin and Western Han Dynasties, thereby making it over 2,000 years old. They were introduced by Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China, and served as the earliest unified currency of the newly established Chinese Empire.

The coin is round with a square hole, a style that would be used on Chinese coins until the early 20th century. One side features the Chinese characters Ban Liang and the other is blank. Each coin measures about 2.4 centimetres in diameter, although this can vary slightly.
