The Nikonos V Orange Film Camera by Nikon is designed for underwater photography. It comes with the W-Nikkor 35mm f/2.5 standard lens and Nikon SB-103 flash. The camera has a die-cast aluminum-alloy body and reinforced plastic that together lend it the needed durability for deep-water photography. This camera uses TTL stopped down exposure metering via two SPD cells with a center-weighted metering pattern. There are two exposure-control modes in the camera: the auto mode is based on aperture priority and the second exposure mode, on manual control. The electronic shutter operates at a maximum speed of 1/1000th of a second. The other features in the camera include an accessory shoe, X-sync, a flash ready light, battery check, and tripod socket.
Optics and Focus
This Nikon film camera for underwater photography comes with a W-Nikkor 35mm f/2.5 lens that is made with seven elements in five groups. As for the camera, it has a TTL stopped down exposure metering with a center-weighted metering pattern, which is powered by two SPD cells. It provides an exposure value of EV 8–19 at ASA 100. The camera has an electronic vertical-travel focal plane shutter that has a maximum speed of 1/1000th of a second. This camera has two exposure modes, viz. auto and manual. The auto mode optimizes the exposure setting based on the current aperture setting.
Sensor and Screen
The Nikonos V Orange Film Camera comes with an inverted Galilean-type Albada viewfinder that offers a 0.55× magnification and approximately 85% field of view. It has a diopter of 0.9 m as well as parallax correction marks. The LED indicators in the viewfinder let you know the current shutter speed and whether or not the exposure is too high or low. A thunderbolt-shaped light notifies you that the flash is ready to fire.
Image and Video
The Nikonos V underwater camera is designed for the standard 35mm cartridge film. The film advance lever has a 144° winding angle and can be hinged back in the camera. When manually rewinding the roll, the shutter-release button is automatically locked. An additive-type frame counter is provided at the top, which shows the number of exposed frames.
Other Features
As this Nikon camera is designed for underwater photography, its back and pressure plate attached to its body are hinged and have a locking latch. The SB-103 Flash comes along with this camera. The camera can also be used with electronic flash units via X-sync sockets. The attached flash can be synchronized with the shutter at up to 1/90th of a second. An accessory shoe is also integrated into the camera design to let you attach optical viewfinders, frame finders, or a sensor unit for the electronic flash. The camera is made from die-cast aluminum alloy and reinforced plastic.
