Banganapalle mangoes are also known as Benishan and are also referred to as “King of Mangoes”. It is a mango variety produced in Banganapalle of Kurnool district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It alone occupies 70% percent of total mango cultivable area of the state and was first introduced by the Farmers of Banaganapalli.

The fruit is described as obliquely oval in shape, around 20 cm in length, with yellow flesh and a thin, smooth yellow skin. The flesh is of a firm, meaty texture and is sweet and lacks fibre. The cultivar is the most sought after in Andhra Pradesh. It is a very late -season variety that is good for canning. This cultivar is a source of vitamin A & C and is also called king of Mangoes.

Significantly larger than their Alphonso counterparts, the Banganapalli mango hails from a village of the same name in Andhra Pradesh. With its pleasant aroma, thin blemish-free skin and fibre-free sweet yellow pulp, the Banganapalli is certainly the choice for those who don’t like fibrous textures in their fruit.

Around 3.78 lakh hectares in 12 districts of Andhra Pradesh account for a production of 49.26 lakh MTS per annum and an annual turnover of Rs.461 crores. The prime season for the fruit is mid February to Mid July.

The Banaganapalli Mango was accorded Geographical Indication GI Tag in May 2017.

The Special cover issued to commemorate the GI tag of Banaganapalli Mango features a colour image of whole Banaganapalli Mangoes and a slice of the same. The special pictorial cancellation is a line graphic sketch of a Banaganapalli Mango. The stamp is of Ecology and Environment 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
