Mario Martin guitars are hand built in Murfreesboro, TN just 40 minutes down the road from us! Undertaking the entire build process from cutting the body blank to spraying the final touch of nitro, Mario Martin achieves a level of guitar making well beyond partscaster builders who may look alike on the surface. These guys maintain one of the best collections of tonewoods around, and every neck/body/pickup combination is chosen carefully to amplify the personality of the guitar as a whole. Whether you crave an S-style guitar straight out of 1958 or the unique Tele-Strat mashup that is the Honcho, we are confident you’ll find what you’re looking for in a Mario Martin.

What Does Josh Think

This guitar delivers that dry, seasoned resonance without reaching $15k into the pocketbook or 60 years back in time. You wouldn’t get a roasted maple neck back then, or a 9.5-12” compound radius fretboard… a couple nice features to have on a modern instrument… but otherwise this one is pretty vintage-inspired spec.

You can feel the open E and A strings resonating against your body before even plugging in. The Arcane ’61 Experience pickup set coaxes strong fundamentals out of the swamp ash body. The balance is very even across all strings and points on the fretboard. This pickup set handles gain particularly well, maintaining a focused and powerful attack as you turn up the amp.

The in-between positions show remarkable equilibrium as well. Rather than sound excessively out-of-phase, they give you a beautiful bit of spank and quack without any volume drop. These positions retain the bold character of the pickups individually, with some extra chime and color in the midrange.

The second tone pot is wired to the bridge pickup in case you want to round off the top end. This places more emphasis on the midrange (both for bridge alone and for bridge/middle), delivering tones that are tight and punchy throughout. But while the natural top end is crisp, it is also pleasant, so you might just want to leave it all the way open!

How Does It Play

This guitar features Mario’s classic C profile, akin to the Fender Modern C but with more supportive shoulders. The string action measures barely a hair over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret, and right at 4/64” on the high E. Low and fast, but with just enough room to dig in without buzz.
