VINTAGE MEXICAN FOLK DANCE MASK C. 1920

This product data sheet is originally written in English.

INDIGENOUS MEXICAN DANCE MASK

Here is a genuine old painted wood mask representing “El Caballero",
a principal character in the important pre-Lenten carnival masked drama; this character is also disparagingly referred to as "El Gachupin", an immigrant to Mexico from Spain.

This genuine vintage mask dates to the early second quarter of the 20th century, measures 9” (22.8 cm) high x 7” (17.7 cm) wide x 3.75” (9.5 cm) deep and is decorated with white, pink, black and gilt paint. Without repairs or restoration and an insignificant hairline commensurate with use and age, this desirable mask is in excellent condition.

This fine old mask has been in the seller’s personal collection since 1964 and represents
an ideal acquisition for the discerning collector, investor, curator or dealer.

This remarkable example of indigenous Mexican folk art is ethnographically-significant as well as a highly-collectible artwork;
