The beginnings of lauhala weaving are obscure in Hawaiian culture, but the techniques of the craft seem not to have changed much over the years. Lauhala articles recovered from ancient burial caves are nearly identical in design to products made more recently. . From the leaves of the Hala tree, the Hawaiians fashioned wall thatch for their houses, mats that covered their floors and mats to sleep on, window shutters, storage baskets, canoe sails and even loincloths. And today Lauhala is used to make prized hats and jewelry that take many hours to complete.
