Vintage Koehler 209 Permissible Flame Safety Lamp Miner's Light Lantern

Brand: Koehler
Style: Miner's Safety Lamp
Size: (Please see photos above for exact measurements)

This safety lamp came out of the Little Dog Mine in Gillespie, Illinois. This is an original lamp that was
used at the mine until it closed. This is not a reproduction. The way it worked is they would set the flame
height between the two lines on the glass (lines are no longer visible). If the flame dropped below the
bottom line, that meant there was a lack of oxygen present. If the flame grew above the top line, that
meant there was gas present. It was only safe to work in the mine if the flame was between the top and
bottom lines. There was also a magnet (not included) that was kept by those in charge that was used to
open the lamp to change the flint or wick and add fuel. It could only be opened by this magent. Only the
superiors had the magnet for safety reasons. This is a really neat looking piece of mining history.
