San Francisco Mint
The Lincoln cent is a one-cent coin that was struck by United States Mint since 1909. In January 1909, the Mint engaged Brenner to design a cent depicting Abraham Lincoln, the late president. The year 1909 marked the 100-year anniversary when Lincoln was born. The cent was the first coin that had the design of a U.S. president. The coin is originally 95% copper. The coin was changed for a year to zinc-coated steel in 1943 as copper was needed to aid war efforts. The mint reverted it back to 95% copper until 1982. Inflation causéd copper to be too expensive resulting in the composition to be changed to zinc with the outer layer being copper.
