Herschede Grandfather's Clock 5 Tube Model 217, Whittier Model, Circa 1937
Runs, Strikes and Westminster Chimes

Item Description

Nice looking Vintage Herschede Grandfather Clock to add to your home or office charm.  Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself!  Video of the clock running, chiming, and striking will be added over the next few days.

The clock dates to 1937  based upon what we see with the clock and movement.  The clock was made by the Herschede Clock Company that once operated in Cincinnati, OH.  This is considered the Whittier model 217, and is noted as such by the impression on the back of the clock case.

This clock case is made of mahogany and is in very good shape.  Very little surface marking on the case other than around the bottom skirt where some ambitious person with a vacuum typically left their mark.

The clock strikes the hours on the hour and then does the Westminster Chimes routine every 15 minutes including on the hour.  The strike has a lighter hour strike on one tube, and the chime's sound is done by 4 separate nickel plated tubes.  This clock is being sold in running, striking and chiming condition at this juncture.  This clock could be called a grandfather or tall case clock, as it is more than 73" tall.

The stained mahogany case on this clock looks very good.  The case has a great design on the front of the case at the corner angles.  The scrolling on the top of the clock and the hinges are in place and all look proper to the clock.  Pilaster columns on both sides of the front door.  The glass is all intact in the case. The door is securely attached to hood by the hinges.  Green fabric in the back of the case to allow the sound of the tubes to come out and be heard.  Only 1 of the 4 screws that hold this wood plate in place is there.

Again, all the wood and trim is still with the clock.  The glass in the doors over the face, the pendulum area and the sides is all intact.  No cracking or blistering.   The door hinges on the door are sound and securely attached to the case.  The lock latch for the pendulum door is there, operates and the key is there.

This movement appears to have been with this clock case since made.  Typically Herschede movements were made by a German company.  The clock has a good beat to the movement with the pendulum and time weight in place.  The clock has a  Westminster chimes unit.  This is a Herschede movement with a lunar dial and was probably made in Germany.  The chimes unit has 4 strike tubes for the chimes and one strike tube for the hours.  This clock is weight driven with braided cables they hang on.   The clock is in running, striking, and chiming condition at this juncture.  The movement plays the Westminster Chimes sequence.  We have not cleaned or serviced the movement, selling as we acquired it.

Nice brass look lacquer finish on the outer shells of the weights.  Some moderate finish loss to the weight shells.  Minor dings or dents to the shells.  The braided brass cables the weights hang on appear to be in good condition and have been replaced at some juncture during the clock's life.

The 5 tubes all look to be in good shape.  Have a silver nickel plated finish on them.  Some spotting to the finish on the shortest tube.  Scratches and some minor loss of finish on all the tubes.  Nice metal pendulum rod with gold colored bob on it.  The bob's finish shows some loss, a minor ding.  We see no repairs or other indicators that would say these pieces are not proper to this clock as well.

Great looking movement and clock face on this clock.  The face shows no tarnishing or finish loss.  The clock has a silver colored metal clock face on it with black roman numerals.  There then is nice looking detailing surrounding the face.  The large clock face is 10.5" across.  The clock also has a very nice looking lunar dial on it.  Has mill, covered bridge, and moon images on it.  The elegant clock hands are black, match, and are appropriate to the clock.  Comes with a wind key.

The clock is too delicate and heavy for shipping safely via normal shipping options, so this clock is for local pick-up, via your shipper or delivery by me within 150 miles of Georgetown, DE.  Buyer is welcome to make their own packing and shipping arrangements as well.  A lot of our clients use the local UPS Store to have items packed and shipped to them as well.  Our customers also use a couple of blanket ship companies (we would pack out the inside of the clock in this situation, rest would be your carrier's responsibility).  You need to understand a blanket ship company can take 6-8 weeks to deliver an item.   We can also put you in contact with our local UPS company for packing/shipping assistance.

We will also offer to deliver the clock to within 150 miles of Georgetown, DE one way.  We would charge $.70 per mile  for the round trip delivery plus any tolls/parking fees.  That offer is for delivery only.  If you want us to set the clock up (strike rod adjustment, weights, and leveling of clock on wall), that would be an additional $100.  Should we agree to deliver this clock to you, and you decide to return the item, for whatever reason, such delivery charges are not refundable.

The Herschede Grandfather Clock stands 80.25" tall by finial, by 20" across at bottom of case, by 12.25" wide.   Sorry, the other items that can be seen in some pics, and other items not described in this listing are not included.  Only the Herschede Grandfatther Clock described here is what is offered for sale.  Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures.

The pictures provided both complement and supplement the listing description, so please look at them very closely as well.  With old items, there is no way one can capture all the little imperfections in words, so the two media are meant to be the full description.

As can be expected when dealing with a vintage clock, some adjustments may be needed after shipping to get the clock re-running correctly again as they can be very delicate.  If you have not had experience with old mechanical clocks before, we would suggest you steer clear.  One really needs to have the patience, and skill to work with these great works of art.  They are not our modern plug in and go, or change the battery clocks.  Please ask any questions relating to this matter, before you decide to purchase it.

Make sure that this item meets your needs and requirements before deciding to acquire it.   The item can be returned, there is a 15% fee of the Item and Shipping Costs, plus 100% of both Shipping Costs to do so.  So, please carefully review all the attached pictures, read the complete listing description, ask all the questions you have, come see in person or send a friend to see the item on your behalf, prior to deciding to acquire it.
