Robert Forgan is one of the most famous club makers who started working for his uncle Hugh Philp in 1852. Philp was renowned as one of the best wooden club makers around. When Philp died in 1856 Forgan took over the business. Many of the other great club makers such as Auchterlonie and Anderson learned their trade with Forgan before setting up on their own. Robert Forgan became clubmaker to HRH Prince of Wales in 1863 and used the prince's plume of three feathers as his mark until 1901, when upon the Prince became King Edward his mark changed to the 'King's Crown'. Forgan's youngest son, Thomas, joined the club-making business in 1881 when it was renamed 'R. Forgan and Son'. The firm was the largest producer of golf clubs in the 1890's and in 1920 it became a Limited company.

Robert Forgan is a vintage & historical brand particularly valuable in hickory format. These Robert Forgan Regd. irons are notable for their punched (dotted) faces rather than lined faces and the coated steel shafts. Steel shafts appeared and were legalised in the early 1930's and were mostly painted brown to look like hickory.  After WW2, silvered and chromed shafts appeared and became general around 1950. I would date these clubs as just pre WW2 or thereabouts. Considering their age they are in good condition. I would imagine the woods are much the same vintage. They are persimmon without face inserts. Though poorer cosmetically, it would be possible to refurbish them back to a good playable condition. The bag is unusual and seemingly in fair condition. It is not branded and made of canvas.

Tommy Armour was a Scot who emigrated to America and made his name in the USA. His nickname was "The Silver Scot". "Tommy Armour" branded golf clubs were made by MacGregor and PGA in the USA and evidently Forgan in the UK.  The name still exists on mass market clubs today. The Tommy Armour putter made by Forgan is rare.

Included in the set are seven Robert Forgan irons - 2/3/4/5/6/7/8, three Tommy Armour persimmon woods, one Frank Hill wood (with woodworm), one Forgan/Tommy Armour Silver Scot putter and one Trueline L Rustless Special Edition putter hand forged in Scotland.
