This is an
original oil painting with mixed media on photogravure by American artist Jerry
De La Cruz (b 1948, Denver, CO). The work is a square format, 9” high by 10”
wide. The framed size of the work is 17.25” high by 16.25” wide.
The subject begins
with the original antique photogravure image, that of Archimedes, the Greek
mathematician and engineer, contemplating some deep mathematical dilemma,
seemingly oblivious to the Roman soldier at his door (who in fact did kill
him). This original painting, “Death of Archimedes,” by Gustave Courtois, has
been converted to a surreal setting, the soldier now reminiscent of a Joan of
Arc figure. Behind the wall, a contemporary farmer with hoe, peers over at the
ruminating old man. And beneath him is a crowded sea of contemporary humanity,
scantily clad on a beach.
This work is from
the artist’s “Antique Print Series.” The palette is fairly bright and broad
with an emphasis on greens and blues. The work is aptly titled “Archimedes’
Dilemma.” It is in pristine condition and signed front lower right by the
artist. The work is framed with a wide, embellished deeply set ivory matting
and a matte gray metal box frame, as shown, and is ready to hang.
