McLoughlin Brothers, a pioneer in literary color printing technologies, produced beautiful specialized children’s books between 1858 to 1920. This 1890’s hardcover antique book Little Merry Makers Story Book includes dozens of short stories from multiple contributing authors illustrated with gorgeous black pen and ink drawings. The author’s names are listed at the end of each story, and many of the original illustrations are initialed or signed. The yellow gold and moss green hardcover features 2 full color illustrations of young girls cradling a kitten and puppy. The binding is of red canvas tape common to that period in book making. The binding is frayed and torn, separated inside from the book pages. The first 2 pages of the book are there, but are loose from the rest of the book. Pages are naturally yellowed from age, a few (not many) pencil scribbles appear on the inside cover and pages. Considering this book is now well over 125 years old in the deteriorating state that it’s in, it is still a rare find for avid children’s literature collectors. This volume is packed with charm and entertaining illustrations.
