HTF Vintage Homer Laughlin Fiesta® Tea / Coffee Cup Yellow FLAT BOTTOM Original USA

Hard to find first production style of the Fiesta® teacup from 1936 and 1937 with the flat bottom on the inside!

It seems Frederick Rhead's usual practice when starting a new line was to first model a small plate as well as a cup and saucer. That's exactly what he did with Fiesta®. Originally called the "colored glaze" line, he later referred to it as "ringed." The final name was not decided upon until May 1935, even though work on the line began in February. The Fiesta® teacup was first modeled in that month with a choice of four handles, non of which were approved. Later in February the familiar ring shaped handle was created and selected for use on the new ware and it would remain on the teacup for more than thirty years.

Vintage Fiesta® Teacups and saucers can be found in 3 varieties. Two features can distinguish the first production cups and saucers from later ones. The cups have a flat inside bottom (like this one) and the saucers have five closely spaced rings around the foot. Like all teacups made until 1960, these have a band of rings inside the cup and a hand turned foot. Neither the cup nor the saucer was marked. This pair was made until late 1937 and are sometimes called Type 1.

The most common style of Fiesta® cups and saucers were modeled in 1937 and were produced until the sixties. The teacups have a round inside bottom with inside rings and a hand turned foot. The saucers are identified by a single thick ring just under the rim and were usually marked with the "Genuine Fiesta" backstamp. The teacups were not marked and these can be called Type 2.

It would be very difficult to find a line more collected and recognized than Fiesta®. It has become so familiar to the general public that when any line of solid colored dinnerware is encountered by a non-collector, he or she almost always calls it Fiesta® when it may have not even been made by Homer Laughlin. Both vintage (1936-1973) and contemporary (1986-present) Fiesta® have become part of American popular culture.
