Description

The Grande Rivière - the Saint Lawrence River - was already flowing in the adolescent dreams of Michel Jamonneau miller in La Bêchée parish of Augé (Poitou). The harsh necessities of life in 17th-century rural France shattered his hopes for another destiny. However, in 1687 - he was twenty-nine years old - the first persecutions against Protestants brought him back there. And Michel, nicknamed Laliberté, embarked for Canada aboard the ship L'Arc-en-Ciel as a soldier in the Compagnies franches de la Marine. It is based on documents provided by the descendant of her hero that the novelist of La Fourche à loup and Les Sabots de la liberté has reconstructed this adventure which takes us from the French countryside that she knows well to Quebec New France where the harsh language of our provinces still survives
