EVERLY BROTHERS CLASSIC

BYE BYE LOVE

(Boudleaux Bryant / Felice Bryant)

US #2 (5/57) / GB #6 (7/57)

Bye bye, love, bye bye, happiness

Hello loneliness, I think I m gonna cry

Bye bye, love, bye bye, sweet caress

Hello emptiness, I feel like I could die

Bye bye my love, good-bye

There goes my baby with someone new

She sure looks happy, I sure am blue

She was my baby till he stepped in

Good-bye to romance that might have been

Bye bye, love, bye bye, happiness

Hello loneliness, I think I'm gonna cry

Bye bye, love, bye bye, sweet caress

Hello emptiness, I feel like I could die

Bye bye, my love, good-bye

I'm through with romance, I'm through with love

I'm through with countin' the stars above

And here's the reason that I'm so free

My loving baby is through with me

Bye bye, love, bye bye, happiness

Hello loneliness, I think I'm gonna cry

Bye bye, love, bye bye, sweet caress

Hello emptiness, I feel like I could die

Bye bye, my love, good-bye

Bye bye, my love, good-bye

Bye bye, my love, good-bye....

The husband-and-wife song-writing team of Boudleaux and Felice Bryant wrote this. Together, this talented couple penned many huge hits for the Everly Brothers and other artists, including "Wake Up Little Susie" and "All I Have To Do Is Dream." The Bryants are credited with being the first songwriters to come to Nashville and make a living only by writing songs.

The Bryants wrote this song for Elvis, who turned it down. Talking to Chet Atkins about it, Chet said, "I've got a couple of young kids coming in to record. Why don't you offer it to them." The Bryants did and the boys liked it, but they struggled in the studio for hours. It just didn't click. Finally in frustration, Don started playing an intro he had thought up for another song. "What's that?" Chet asked. "Tack that onto the front of 'Bye Bye Love'. I think we've got something here." He was right. Don's guitar intro was the "hook" that got people's attention and sold the song...the Everly Brothers' first hit.

IN THE UK THE RECORD REACHED NUMBER 6 IN THE CHARTS AND STAYED IN THE CHARTS A TOTAL OF 16 WEEKS - IT WAS THE EVERLY BROTHERS FIRST HIT
