Keuffel & Esser Surveyor Transit w/ Compass and Case

Civil Engineering Corp - United States Navy
No Tripod Stand or Plumb Bob

 Serial # 108400

Dates to 1931

Item Description

Here is a nice piece of surveying equipment for your buying consideration.  Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself!

This Keuffel & Esser Surveyor's Transit is being offered to you at a price below what you would see in a high end auction house or clock shop.  We have been selling items out of our home for over 35 years.  We can therefore better control our acquisition costs, keep commission costs low (if applicable), and finally, we don't have the overhead that the high end auction houses and galleries experience.

Beautiful vintage transit here that was used in the field at one time in its' history.  We are selling the piece in the condition that we found it.

Made by Keuffel & Esser that was established in New York, NY in the 1867.  This transit has a serial number of 73220 (incised on the transit body) which dates it to a 1940 production year.

The serial number of 108400 on the transit is also on the case.  There is the number 31/2-8 incised along the bottom ring of the transit.

Still has a good finish on the transit itself.  Some of the flat black paint on the transit body has worn off over time and with use, see pics.

The glass lenses appear to all be intact, no cracking or blistering.  Expect the lenses are scratched from use and age and would need to be polished to make completely usable again. No dents or dings to the transit body or the body of the scope. Nice polished brass and black enamel painted metal body to the transit.

The company name is noted in the middle of the compass body.  A heavy piece here.   The three brass adjusting screws to level the instrument all move freely.  The bubble level is still in place on the transit and has the fluid in it.

The knob that adjusts the focus on the top on the transit does not seem to operate the piece.  No end cap is in place on the transit as well to cover the large glass lens.

The wood case is all there, except the veneer on the top of the case.  The Keuffer & Esser tag is still in the transit case.   The top of the case is still securely attached by the hinges.  Brass corner protectors on the top of the case.  The lock for the case is in place, no key comes with it.  Only remnants of the leather carrying strap remain on the case.

The transit is 7.75" tall, by 18-5/16" across, by 4.75" wide.   The case is 9.75" tall, by 20" across, by 6-3/8" wide.  Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures.  Don’t be shy to make an offer, we are always open to reasonable suggestions.

Other items that can be seen in the pictures do not come with this transit and case.  Only the Keuffel & Esser surveyor piece and the case described in this listing is what is being offered to you here.

Make sure that this item meets your needs and requirements before deciding to acquire it.   The item can be returned, there is a 15% restocking fee to do so.  So, please carefully review all the attached pictures, ask all the questions you have, come see in person or send a friend to see the item on your behalf, prior to deciding to acquire it.
