"The Plague. Fiction Founded upon Fact, by the author of Robinson Crusoe. With a sketch of his life, and of the most prominent of his writings. London: George Routledge, Soho-Square."

No date, but the Welcome Museum has a copy which they date 1843-1846. That ties in with the name inscription dated December 25th, 1847 (see photo).

This is a most attractive, small (almost miniature) edition with decorative covers, all page edges gilt, and a colour printed pre-title page. Some wear on the covers, but generally a delightful small volume. The 1847 inscription "from his affectionate papa" is an added bonus, and there is a sketch of Defoe's life by Arthur Freeling.

This edition appears to be very scarce.

Size: the covers measure approx. 12cms x 8.5cms. 398 pages, plus 16 pages of Routledge book adverts.
Condition: Covers with wear, especially on the spine, but still attractive. New front endpaper? An attractive 1847 name inscription on the back of the title page, and another on the title page dated 1923. The text is generally clean, and all is holding together. Slight foxing at the back. Not a bad copy of a scarce item. Please study the photographs.

Postage: £4.75 within the UK. £14.00 to Europe, £20.00 to USA etc.
