This unusual hand-written letter from Kirwin, Kansas in 1879. Written in striking red ink by "Nina." Unusual due to the fact that red ink was not often used and had a tendency to fade. the letter speaks to some gossip that was circulated about her but she can take the heat with her "broad" shoulders. Nina further apologizes for the use of the red ink but she was out of black and the walk to Kirwin town was 8 miles and that Kirwin was "silly, with no churches or sidewalks."  Kirwin had just been founded (about ten years earlier) and had few residents. Interesting to note that there was a serial book published in Kansas in the newspapers with "Nina" as a principle character.  5" x 8" paper that opens to 5" x 16", four pages. Nice read.
