Its debut was at the 1984 Geneva Show. The Ferrari 288 GTO was developed to compete in the Group B sports car races of the time. Although based on Ferrari's best-selling model, the 308 GTB, it was a completely different monster machine, with a tubular steel space frame and plastic body, and a longitudinally mounted 2855cc V8 twin-turbo engine in the mid-ship position. It boasts a maximum output of 400 hp and a top speed of 305 km/h. The body, which makes extensive use of lightweight materials, has wider front and rear fenders. The three slits and ducktail at the rear of the rear fenders were inspired by the Ferrari 250 GTO, which won the championship for three consecutive years starting in 1962. Although it lost its chance to participate in actual competition due to the disappearance of the Group B category, its high mechanism was carried over to the F40, a commemorative model introduced in 1987 to celebrate Ferrari's 40th anniversary.
