1954 Lincoln Cosmopolitan Sedan

For consignment, some big chrome, big trimmings, nicely scaled proportions and wrap around glass...we give you Lincoln's generation 2 of the Cosmopolitan.  A fresh from long term storage car, graced with a 317ci Y block 8 cylinder, and bathed in subdued gray, you can own a snappy boulevard cruiser/head turner right out of the early 1950's when Detroit was definitely king.

Exterior
Leading the way is an imposing dual tier chrome front bumper.  Vertical struts with mini dagmar toppers point forward and the bumper and even the marker lenses wrap around the sides.  The hood cascaded downward and has a large chrome V and partially missing Lincoln crest that edges the front of the hood.  Simple single headlights grace the front of each quarter and the long lean hood gracefully makes its way back to approach the beginnings of a wrap-around windshield.  All glass has thick chromed surrounds and this continues for the side and rear glass, simulating the bubble windows yet to come.  On either side is a large trim spear running the length, and on the back are fender skirts with some stainless trimmings to simulate motion in static form.  On back, a large rear bumper cradles the chrome trimmed cathedral style taillights and small chrome dagmars are on just above.  All bathed in Wellington Gray with straight steel, but showing several areas of rust bubbling on the sides near the rockers, evidence of filler on the rockers, and chip offs throughout.  Rounding out our exterior tour are 15-inch steel wheels with standard Lincoln covers and slightly askew porta-walls.

Interior
A swing of the doors allows us to view the foursome of color and materials making up the panels  These also sport swoop spear shaped chrome trim for an accent, as well as shiny cranks and actuators, a blue painted steel sill, gray painted inserts, and a varying hue and textured broadcloth in blue.  Inside on the sprawling benches are nicely done light blue broadcloth lower cushions that work their way half up the backs before changing over to a darker blue perforated cloth.  A wide rear bench awaits the passengers, and it is beautifully preserved in the same pattern as the front bench, but holds a central fold down armrest.  A full metal dash painted gray and blue has a single eyebrow bump up in front of the driver.  Here we note the gold tinted gauge cluster which is nice and clean along with the heater slides, a few knobs and pulls and the factory AM radio.  An original black steering wheel with nice chromed horn rings and center is fronting the futuristic dash.  Blue carpeting, soiled and wrinkled, floods the floors and a lightly soiled blue/gray headliner hangs above.

Drivetrain
Under the hood in a patina presenting engine bay is an aquamarine painted Y block V8 in 317.5ci displacement.  It is topped with a gold air cleaner assembly covering the factory 4-barrel carburetor.  An engine cross over exhaust feeds down to join into a single pipe providing the exhale.  On the back of this aqua Y block is a Hydramatic 4-speed automatic transmission.  The rear axle on this car is a 3.31 ratio.

Undercarriage
Solid steel framing and floor pans underneath have a nice coating of factory undercoating.  Single stock style exhaust snakes its way rearward, past independent coil springs upfront and to the rear leaf springs.  Drum brakes are on all 4 corners.  It is mostly rust free with the majority of the flaws being patina and surface rust on the usual suspects.

Drive-Ability
As with any car fresh from long term storage, some TLC is in order before ignition is attempted.  We can however note that the engine does turn over by hand.

In need of some TLC on the exterior body and chrome but the majority of the trimmings are all in excellent condition.  The beginnings of curved bubble style rear glass and large cruiser that can go all day on a turnpike road and turn plenty of heads while doing so.  Isn't it time to turn some wrenches and enjoy the life of excess the other half lives.
