1968 Chevrolet Camaro Hardtop

For consignment, one that has those two words we love to hear and verify, perhaps the most coveted phrase in the world of classic cars especially with muscle and pony cars, numbers matching.  Yes, the original power plant is in place with 30,778 title verified actual miles; the car has been professionally freshened as we'll explore.  In a sea of cars with upgrades and cosmetic/performance modifications, we breathe a collective sigh of enjoyment when a car with clean, original specifications comes through our doors.  Read on and start making room in the garage.

Exterior
A professional repaint in the original hue of Matador Red presents very nicely.  It's as exciting an exterior now as it must have been in 1968, there's nothing quite like a red Camaro!  The grille with inset marker lights is fantastic and the rear panel, with the base 2 part taillights, is spectacular.  The chrome bumpers shine bright and the 15-inch Rally wheels are showroom clean.  Try as we might, we're having a hard time finding any faults with this exterior and some of us would probably opt to trailer this car to shows in an enclosed unit so that it arrives at the event unscathed.  So far, so good.

Interior
Right this way, ladies and gentlemen, back to 1968.  Molded black door panels greet you with window cranks, chrome door actuator, black door pulls, and armrests.  The panels show just a tad of wear and fading.  The vinyl bucket seats have black and white houndstooth inserts and the first chink in the armor, as we note two small tears in the seat and seat back on the driver's side, but who can complain as this is the original upholstery.  Moving on to the back seats helps redeem the flaw because they look brand new.  The transmission hump in the middle is blank as this is a column shift car.  The T-spoke plastic steering wheel is wrapped in an aftermarket cover and the beveled pods of the two main gauges are visible behind the wheel.  This includes a speedometer showing those sweet low miles and a gas gauge.  Chrome buttons and vents surround the main cluster and present nicely as do the vent controls and AM radio in the center stack.  The black loop carpet, headliner, and dash pad were replaced during the freshening and are in excellent condition.  The trunk is bare and spotless.

Drivetrain
The original and numbers matching 327ci V8 is in place and rated at 210 horsepower, fed fuel by a single, 2-barrel carburetor.  The engine was removed at some point for the bay to be painted and detailed and it's now show quality.  The 2-speed automatic Powerglide transmission is also numbers matching.  Drum brakes, both aft and rear, are standard here.  Stock exhaust manifolds flank the block.  The rear is a 10 bolt with conventional 3.07 gearing.

Undercarriage
Super nice under here without evidence of surface rust.  The single exhaust extends the length of the car meeting a stock style muffler at the back which sends out two tailpipes.  From here we can see the staggered tire sizes 205/70/15 in front and 255/60/15 in back.  Coil springs cushion the front independent suspension while mono leaf springs handle the back.  Some evidence of residual oil on the oil and transmission pans and some paint overspray is noted on the oil filter.

Drive-Ability
With just 30,755 miles, we weren't about to rack up anymore.  But a short lap around our test loop didn't spin the odo too much and we must verify the car runs.  And of course it did with all the youthful exuberance of a 30k mile car.  "Time capsule" may be a cliché term by now, but it really does feel like 1968 all over again.  The car has a nice rumble and the brakes work well to slow the fun.

It would be awesome for the Camaro people to see this car during their national event here in July.  But, as good as this car is, we suspect it won't be here at least in our inventory.  Perhaps the new owner will bring it and collect a trophy or two.  He's in for some questions and comments, that's for darn sure!  At the very least, we hope he, (or she), joins one of the dozens of regional Camaro clubs around the country and have this thing seen and enjoyed by others!
