Dear Mother,

I received your kind letter yesterday about an hour after landing at this place. We are once more out of the army of the Potomac, and I have no doubt, but we shall soon be marching home. We left City Point on the afternoon of the 28th and arrived here after a nice ride of 22 hours. All of the troops belonging to this Corp are encamped just outside of this city. The 35th are camped near Fort Farnsworth, and I am now writing in Johnny Whiting’s tent.  All of the Waltham boys are well. Q____ is in Washing.  His wound is most well.  The whole volunteer army will be discharged soon and do not be surprised if you see the 35th to home by 1st of  June. I am enjoying good health and shall probably return to the regiment in a few days. I suppose you would like to come out to see us, but we shall be to home soon and the bother would spoil all your happiness for they are very strict this way and if Chas has not seen the War – he need not.  If he has I shall see it in a few days.
I have no news of importance to write. Only the war is over, and peace will be restored in a few weeks. Give my regards to all and say we will soon be to Home. From your ever affectionate son,
George
My love to father, Chas & Wife & friend. Excuse short letter, I will write again in a day or two.
