This medal was produced by the Royal Mint to commemorate Empire Day of 24 May (in 1928) being the anniversary of Queen Victoria's birth. The Royal Mint produced this medal for the British Empire Union which was founded in 1916 to celebrate & promote British history & tradition.


Obverse:

Image of H.R.H. (His Royal Highness) The Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII) facing left. The text "For God King and Empire" across the top.


Reverse:

Seated Britannia holding olive branch & caduceus. The text "Empire Day May 24th" across the top & "British Empire Union" below the seated Britannia.


Note: a separate medal w/different reverse was issued in 1929 which was accompanied often w/date bars for subsequent years.


Monarchy at Issue Date (1928): King George V (Reigned from 1910-1936). Note: The image at the obverse, Prince Edward became King following King George V's death in 1936. King Edward VIII reigned during the year 1936 before his younger brother, King George VI succeeded him.
