Magnolia Sunsation is a cross between M. x brooklynensis Woodsman and M. Elizabeth and was raised by August Kehr in the USA. A deciduous large shrub, occasionally small tree, of conical shape. This superb variety produces masses of large, upright, tulip shaped, fragrant yellow flowers with a stunning contrasting rosy purple blush to the base of the petals in April and May, before the leaves unfurl. Flowering slightly later than most Magnolias, there is less chance the flowers will be damaged by frost. Easy to grow in full sun or partial shade in an acidic to neutral, free draining, fertile soil. Magnolia Sunsation will not grow well in chalky soils. Most Magnolias will grow well in clay soils as long as they drain well. An excellent plant as a central feature in the garden borders or in a pot or container. When pot growing use a good quality ericaceous compost. These plants are not ericaceous but prefer the acidic pH of this type of compost. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year.

Nb. These plants are grafted.
