MCU Phase 4-5-6 Key Character Art Cover
YELENA BELOVA / WHITE WIDOW

  • Highly Collectable Solo Trade Variant Art Cover by J. Scott Campbell

This series -- the most recent BLACK WIDOW solo series -- first dropped during the latter half of 2020, keeping Marvel's Russian spy and one of Marvel Studios' most popular characters in continual publication since the effort to do so began in 2014. While the titular heroine had perished the year before in Avengers: Endgame, the soon-to-launch first film of the MCU's Phase IV, the BLACK WIDOW prequel, was on the horizon with a Summer 2021 premiere. Maintaining the relevance and recognition of the character portrayed so well by actress Scarlet Johansson was the series' goal --- but it wasn't its only goal.

With this new Black Widow's second issue, Marvel's other goal for the series came into focus with the introduction, or re-introduction, of YELENA BELOVA, a character to be portrayed in the upcoming film by Academy Award-winning actress Florence Pugh, whom many speculated would graduate from the Black Widow solo as Johansson's replacement in the MCU and on the AVENGERS. We know now, sitting here in 2024, that Black Widow's post-credits scene proved that speculation to be only partially correct. Yelena would be no Avenger, but she would indeed go forward in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Thus the recap above brings us back to superstar cover artist J. SCOTT CAMPBELL's most excellent VARIANT COVER for Black Widow #2, in which he portrays YELENA BELOVA for the first time after a long, long absence in the Marvel's comics.  Indeed, it's reasonable to say that Campbell's Variant Cover serves as Yelena's FIRST MODERN SOLO COVER APPEARANCE, as the character is much changed from Natasha Romanov's original nemesis from the Red Room. Whatever "slight" artistic physical differences there may have been, Campbell's "White Widow" is, in essence, Florence Pugh's Yelena from Black Widow.

That truth turned up the heat on this Campbell Variant, and though it cooled off a bit in the aftermath of that film and Pugh's subsequent appearances in Hawkeye,  the heat never disappeared. Now, with THUNDERBOLTS on the horizon and Yelena set as that team's main character, Campbell's White Widow will soon become realized in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That understanding is turning up the heat on his Variant once again, and it's all but certain that this book will only keep getting hotter. Give your collection what it deserves...today!
