To keep up with customer demand in the face of Covid-19 related production delays, the United States Mint authorized a limited production run of bullion Silver Eagles at the Philadelphia Mint. Such bullion issues are generally struck at the West Point Mint. This piece comes from that historic run. Early 2021 Silver Eagle releases are also some of the final issues that will include John Mercanti’s original heraldic eagle reverse design, which is set to be replaced mid-year.

The U.S. Mint launched the American Silver Eagle in 1986. In honor of the series' 35th Anniversary in 2021, the Mint has changed the reverse design of the coin for the first time ever. Early year releases such as this example were the last to feature the Type-1 heraldic eagle reverse design created by the Mint's 12th Chief Engraver, John Mercanti. In fact, the United States Mint reserved the very last 200,000 Type 1 Silver Eagles to be struck in 2021 and releases them later in the year.

The US Mint strove to keep its workers safe and maintain its production from 2020 into 2021 despite the pandemic and the constrained silver supply. Because of limited resources at its facilities, many silver coin programs were delayed. This includes the 2021 Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars as well as the 2020 and 2021 Silver Eagle coins. The silver shortage was caused by multiple factors, but particularly owing to internationally high investment demand. Therefore, these 2021 Silver Eagle coins are designated as Emergency Issues. They carry modern history along with the beloved original reverse design for the last time.
