A stunning, heavy hot-worked Czech glass sculptural vase, it comes in the sought after vibrant blue colour, a combination of cobalt blue glass encased in clear glass. A show stopping centrepiece vase that will make a great addition to any vintage art glass collection.

This was designed by Pavel Hlava in 1968 for Crystalex and made at the Borske Sklo glassworks at Novy Bor in the former Czechoslovakia. It is not signed.

Standing at 25.25cm, this item is very striking and beautiful to look at and to handle. Tactile, eye catching, large and impressive, put it on your windowsill and let the light flood through, or use it to hold flowers in a mid-century setting.

This vase is one of Pavel Hlava’s most recognisable pieces, and has been given the nick name of the brain vase, otherwise known as the cage vase. It is an iconic freeform design in Bohemian glass, by a master of glass design. Its naturalistic shape emerges from the straight cylindrical form, skilfully creating the illusion of liquidity, which is such a prized attribute in art glass.

Condition:

The vase is in very good vintage condition, with no significant chips, cracks or restoration. Being about 55 years old, if you look very close up you can detect the tiniest signs of use.

It has some tiny marks to the base from where it has been moved around. There is a minuscule chip in the side about 1mm wide and a very light scratch about 1cm long, see the last 3 photos.

A note on buying vintage art glass:

Major chips, cracks, scratches and restoration will be noted in the description, but pieces of glassware that are several decades old will often have tiny surface scratches or blemishes that are really hard to see. With hand made glass pieces there could be bubbles and inclusions within the glass from when it has been shaped and worked during the manufacturing process. It is usual to find light movement marks to the base from when it has been moved around.
