The famous place of the whetstone: It becomes a grinding stone for finishing
of
 MARUKA  Sho-Honyama Nakayama for Kyoto.
There is a stamp, see photograph.

The "Hatanaka Toishi Company" of Kyoto has been for generations the premier
stone company providing the best sharpening stones from all of the Honyama mines.
The Hatanaka Co. were the main outlet of Nakayama stones for years, 
they maintained close ties with Mr. Kato, owner of the Nakayama mine. 
Eventually Hatanaka became 
the owner of the Nakayama mine. 
The last Nakayama minings were between 1972-1982 and 1985-1988.

The hardness of this grindstone is Lv4.5/ 5.
It is extremely stiff, and there is little sharpening juice.
Smooth sharpening, strong abrasive power.
There are cracks, chipping etc.
There is no effect on sharpening.
This is one of the few grinding stones in recent years that still has the skin of the original stone on the back.
 It is ideal for polishing kitchen knives, carpentry tools (chisels, planes), and straight razor blades (Hagane).

Besides the abrasive surface, it is protected by cashew.
