Sebastiano Carta (Priolo Gargallo, 4 March 1913 – Rome, 8 July 1973) was an Italian painter and poet, author of works belonging to futurism.

 

Attracted by the world of the arts, Sebastiano Carta joined Futurism at a very young age and at just twenty years old, after having received the appreciation of Filippo Tommaso Marinetti for his writing Physical Systemation, overcoming even the opposition of his family, he left for the capital.

Marinetti immediately understood its expressive strength and potential and introduced it into the Roman group, of which Carta would represent, if possible, the most anarchic and transgressive side, also departing from the more traditional styles of the movement. He produced "parolibere" tables (1933), exhibited at Anton Giulio Bragaglia and signed the "Manifesto of Mural Poetry" in 1936.

Poet, painter, polemicist, in 1944, after the futurist experience ended, together with Stradone, Dorazio, Zavattini, Guttuso founded the "Casa Rossa", an anti-bourgeois cultural group, forming friendships with Roberto Melli, Antonio Marasco, Enrico Accatino, who like him they chose Rome as their new city of choice.

An anomalous artist, he moved to Como and Pavia and joined the "Valori Primordiali" group inspired by the architect Giuseppe Terragni. Returning to Rome, he participated in two Quadrennials, developing a painting different from all his friends and traveling companions, exploring since the 1950s a conceptual abstractionism that brought him closer to the Bauhaus than to Italian painting, often bordering on the expressionist area. With a highly recognizable style and with an approach to work almost like a "street artist" ante litteram, so much so that the writer Cesare Zavattini wrote: "... when he spreads out the large sheets of paint in front of his friends, we start to love and respect him again. we walk around these sheets like the figures that street painters make on the sidewalks..." It is a solitary path, marked by serious economic problems and a difficulty in fitting into the bourgeois and commercial context which in recent years has prevented him from exhibiting. He died at just sixty years old, in Rome, in 1973.

 

The drawings on this Fabriano sheet are from the last year of his life, 1973, and his measurements are 70 cm x 50 cm. These are very original Landscape in the making.

Although the sheet is in excellent condition, the frame (very heavy) is in terrible condition, especially on the back side, so only the work is for sale, without the frame.

 

The work is signed and is absolutely original, as it was personally given by the artist to my parents. Sebastiano Carta was my uncle.

Attratto dal mondo delle arti, Sebastiano Carta aderisce giovanissimo al Futurismo e ad appena vent'anni, dopo aver ricevuto l'apprezzamento di Filippo Tommaso Marinetti per il suo scritto Sistemazione Fisica, superando anche le opposizioni della famiglia, parte per la capitale.

Marinetti ne intuisce subito la forza espressiva e le potenzialità e lo introduce nel gruppo romano, del quale Carta rappresenterà, se possibile, il lato più anarchico e trasgressivo, discostandosi anche dagli stilemi più tradizionali del movimento. Produce tavole "parolibere" (1933), espone da Anton Giulio Bragaglia e firma nel 1936 il "Manifesto della Poesia Murale".

Poeta, pittore, polemista, nel 1944, terminata l'esperienza futurista, insieme a Stradone, Dorazio, Zavattini, Guttuso fonda la "Casa Rossa", gruppo di cultura antiborghese, legandosi di amicizia con Roberto Melli, Antonio Marasco, Enrico Accatino, che come lui hanno scelto Roma come nuova città di elezione.

Artista anomalo, si sposta a Como e a Pavia e aderisce al gruppo "Valori Primordiali" ispirato dall'architetto Giuseppe Terragni. Tornato a Roma partecipa a due Quadriennali, sviluppando una pittura diversa da tutti i suoi amici e compagni di viaggio, esplorando sin dagli anni '50 un astrattismo concettuale che lo porta più vicino alla Bauhaus che alla pittura italiana, spesso sconfinando in area espressionista. Con uno stile fortemente riconoscibile e con un approccio al lavoro quasi da "street artist" ante litteram, tanto che lo scrittore Cesare Zavattini scriverà: "… quando stende davanti ai suoi amici i grandi fogli di pittura, si ricomincia ad amarlo e a stimarlo. Ci aggiriamo attorno a questi fogli come alle figure che i pittori ambulanti fanno sui marciapiedi…" (dal catalogo Sebastiano Carta, Galleria Battaggia, Roma, 4 marzo-4 aprile 1971).

È un percorso solitario, segnato da gravi problemi economici e da una difficoltà di inserimento nel contesto borghese e commerciale che negli ultimi anni gli impedisce di esporre. Morirà a soli sessant'anni, a Roma, nel 1973.

 

I disegni di questo foglio Fabriano sono dell’ultimo suo anno di vita, il 1973, e le sue misure sono cm 70 x cm 50. Si tratta di un opera dal titolo "Paesaggio in formazione".

Nonostante il foglio sia in ottime condizioni, la cornice (molto pesante) è in pessimo stato, specialmente nel lato posteriore, per cui in vendita è solo l’opera, senza cornice.

 

L’opera è firmata ed è assolutamente originale, in quanto regalata dall’artista personalmente ai miei genitori. Sebastiano Carta era mio zio.
