CONDITION:  Excellent, only some kiln dirt inside hind quarter of panther that is hidden.

This parian porcelain figurine is presumed to be of English origin.  It is unsigned but of very high quality from the middle of the 19th century.  It measures 9 3/4 inches long, 11 3/4 inches high and 5 inches wide.  The parian porcelain is finely modeled with excellent detail.  Facial features, fingers, toes and paws are well defined. The surface has a smooth, waxen feel. The subject matter, “Ariadne and the Panther”, is taken from a sculpture by Heinrich von Dannecker originating around 1805. Greek and Roman mythological subjects became very popular in the mid 19th century, using parian porcelain to imitate marble.  The parian figurine of Ariadne by Minton is best known.  It is a wonderful example of Victorian porcelain art.  #E583
