In order to write this book the author, an early American Baptist minister and Baptist historian, traveled extensively throughout North America to collect the facts and documents he needed. He did this for more than a year, visiting the states and territories, and traveling more than 4,000 miles on horseback. Beyond that, he wrote many hundreds of letters as well to collection his information. And he examined the records of around of 2,000 churches. You can imagine that the undertaking of this book took years.

This first portion of this book covers the Baptist in countries other than United States and Canada. Also covered is the rise of the first Baptist churches in America, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Also New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Upper Canada, and Pennsylvania.
