Robert De Vaugondy 1752 Large Map of Belgium Brabant Meridional from 1752 Atlas?

Item Description

Wow, what a great old map of parts of Europe for your collection or decorating needs.  Came in a portfolio folder, I picked up at a recent auction with 2 other antique maps and much artwork.  I have not found another map like it for sale on the internet at this time.  If from the 1752 atlas put out by De Vaughody, there were only about 1,200 of these engravings made and not many of them have survived the 260 years since publication.

This map and other items in the portfolio appears to have once belonged to a New York doctor named G. Kleefeid.  Kleefeid appears to have originally been Belgian and traveled there quite frequently.  His address back in the 1970s was 115 Central Park West in New York City, right alongside Central Park, so seemed to have done quite well for himself and would explain why such fine pieces were all found together.  Other pieces in this portfolio will be put up on my eBay store over the next few days.  This is a very large map for that period which explains the taping along the middle as the image was too large for the presses that were being utilized.

The map appears to be appropriate for that period.  There was no letter of authenticity that came with the piece and I am certainly no map expert.  It looks very similar to other pieces I have seen in galleries and shops over the years.  The impression of the print is around the whole perimeter.  The paper looks appropriate for what used at that time.  De Vaugondy was considered one of the best map makers of his time and his pieces are highly sought after.  Another map maker whom used Sanson plates (was somehow related to him).  Note the "Brabant Meridional" engraved on the back of the map.

The taping that was done to put the two large pieces of the map together appears to be original to the map.   The map printing technique was called hand colored copperplate.  The map is certainly available, for your viewing, prior to purchase, by appointment in Wilmington, DE.   The map shows some wear along the edges, but seems to be in very good shape if this piece is actually over 260 years old.  Appears not to have ever been framed as no discoloration around the edges is showing.

The map has the year 1752 noted in the seal at the right bottom.  The map is 21.75" across, by 31" tall when unfolded.   Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures.
