Launched with the intention of being an ongoing Anthology series with different creative teams contributing their own unique arcs, Marvel Comics' SAVAGE HULK #001 hit stores in June of 2014 and an opening story-arc written and illustrated by creator Alan Davis. Featuring the X-MEN, Davis' story begins immediately after X-Men (1st series) #66, the last issue of the original stories published in that series until Giant Size X-Men #1 and X-Men (1st series) #94, and explores, for the first time in Marvel comics and over the course of four issues, the origin of the relationship between PROFESSOR XAVIER and DR BRUCE BANNER. That relationship may, in time, contribute greatly to the collectability of Savage Hulk #1-4, should Marvel Studios' explore Banner and Xavier's relationship in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Davis' four-issue run on the title was followed by a two-issue arc featuring Doctor Strange by Corinna Bechko and Gabriel Hardman, after which the series was prematurely cancelled. Ultimately, with a total series run of only six published issues, Savage Hulk --- the second series to be so titled, following the Savage Hulk #1 (Vol 1) one-shot from Marvel's Edge imprint in 1996 -- has remained an often over-looked, small piece of the Hulk's extensive publication history.
It's from this rather forgotten short series, ironically, that one of the HOTTEST, RAREST and most IN-DEMAND VARIANT COVERS of the Modern Era has arisen: the RETAILER INCENTIVE 1:75 "75 YEARS OF MARVEL" COLR ART VARIANT COVER from superstar artist ALEX ROSS.
Whenever Marvel Comics wants to truly put eyes on an issue, Alex Ross is the go-to guy. His iconic, nostalgic portrayals of popular characters and his incredible talent are instant draws, and Marvel's 75th Anniversary stood out as an excellent reason for the publisher to employ his services, which at the time (2013-2014) weren't too easy to obtain as Ross was then under contract with Dynamite Entertainment. But Marvel's Marvel and secure him they did, the result taking the form of Marvel's "75th Anniversary / 75 Years of Marvel Variant Covers Series": twelve unique covers from Ross, from which his artwork would be used to create both a color variant and a sketch variant for one series per month for twelve consecutive months.
Ross's "75 Years of Marvel" Variants series began in January (Cover date: March) 2014 with Avengers #25 (Vol 5), for which a 1:75 Color Variant and 1:200 Sketch Variant of his artwork were published. For every subsequent set of Ross variants, beginning with February's Fantastic Four #1 (Vol 5), Marvel would increase the ratio of the Sketch Variant Cover from 1:200 to 1:300. A year later, Ross' series concluded with his twelfth set and the publication of Uncanny X-Men #29 (Vol 3), cover date February 2015.
SAVAGE HULK #001, with its 1:75 COLOR VARIANT and corresponding 1:300 SKETCH VARIANT, was the sixth set of Ross covers published, debuting in June 2014 (cover date August). Interestingly, despite the ratio difference between the cover's color and sketch variants, the availability of Ross' Sketch Variant is exponentially higher than that of the 1:75 Color Variant, thus keeping the market value of the Sketch Variant relatively low as a result.
Conversely, SAVAGE HULK #001 1:75 COLOR VARIANT has been crowned as a truly rare publication and has been listed as an official rare comic book collectible on the Recalled Comics website. Few if any copies are found for sale anywhere in the secondary market or at retail, and only 24 copies of the variant are listed on the CGC census, with 17 of the 24 in a CGC 9.8. Clearly, of the unknown number of existing Ross 1:75 Color Variants of SAVAGE HULK #001, those that have them are keeping them.
- Sasquatch Comics is truly proud, therefore, to bring an incredible as-New copy of the SAVAGE HULK #001 1:75 COLOR VARIANT to eBay and provide collectors world-wide a rare opportunity to pick-up this rare Alex Ross gem for their collections. Part of the Sasquatch Comics Exchange VAULT collection, our collection of exceptional copies of the most wanted Marvel and DC Comics comic books, we guarantee your satisfaction should you decide that today is the day you give your collection exactly what it deserves.
