About
126 Film:
126 film, a
cartridge-based format used in still photography, was introduced by Kodak in
1963. It’s primarily associated with low-end point-and-shoot cameras,
especially Kodak’s own Instamatic series. The film was once quite popular, but
as of 2008, it is no longer manufactured, and few photofinishers process it1.
Here are some technical details about 126 film:
Image
Size: Although it was
originally intended to record 26 mm square images, the actual image size is
approximately 28×28 mm (usually reduced to around 26.5×26.5 mm during printing
or mounting).
Cartridge
Design: The film comes in a
plastic cartridge with a continuous backing paper. The frame number is visible
through a small window at the rear of the cartridge.
Unperforated
Film: Unlike 135 film, 126
film is unperforated, except for one registration hole per image.
Sensing Pin: Cameras
equipped with a sensing pin prevent winding past the pre-exposed frame lines.
Film
Speed Notch: The top edge of the
cartridge has a square notch indicating the film speed.
Processing
Availability: Since it’s 35 mm
wide and developed using the standard C-41 process, most photofinishers can
process 126 films1.
Although 126 film is
no longer in regular production, some old stocks may still be available.
Ferrania produced 126 cassettes in 2007, and
these are occasionally sold under various labels. Keep in mind that the film speed may vary,
with some cartridges having ASA 64 notches instead of the standard ASA 2002.
