The sub-title of this book is "The Northern Telegraph Companies Royal Engineers (Army Troops) The 49th (West Riding) Divisional Signals". Raised in 1861 with the creation of numerous volunteer military units in response to potential hostilities with France, members of the Company first saw active service during the Boer War with two volunteer sections deployed.
