Up for auction is this lovely superb and rare early hand built Alan
Competizione Road Race Frame from the early 1970s, probably 1973. It is
finished in an elegant anodised silver with all the ALAN decals and
comes complete with a smooth Campagnolo Chorus Strada alloy headset. This is
the rare early version with triangle cutouts of the rear dropouts; most have a
circular cutout. In 1972, ALAN was the first
company to introduce an all aluminium frameset made from
aerospace grade aluminum. Just a few years later in 1976, ALAN was again
first in developing and manufacturing a production carbon frame made by
bonding Torayca carbon fibre composite tubing to cast aluminium lugs; a process
still widely used today by many manufacturers. This
is one of the most iconic frames alongside the Vitus 979, a true classic
of cyclosport history which was revolutionary for its time which is highly
prized by collectors today. The Alan was among the first wave of
aluminium-framed bikes and designed for road race, cyclo-cross and sprint. It
was superior and superseded steel frames such as Columbus SLX or Reynolds 753
in the pro peleton.Over the years ALAN's expertise in frame building, and its
reputation for quality led to ALAN frames being ridden to 20 World Cyclo cross
Championships, 5 World Track Title Championships, numerous classics wins, as
well as stage wins in the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a
Espana
