Johannn Wiltsch 1843 Atlas Parts of Europe and Asian Continents 5 Plates Bound H J Ripley - Newton Institute

Item Description

Atlas Sacer Sive Ecclesiasticus.  Wow, what a great piece that we just recently picked up at an auction.  Would make a great gift or keep for yourself!

Only other one I found online was in the Special Collections at the University of Wisconsin.   There is a 21 page lead in document that is pasted to the inside of the atlas before the plates.  The booklet is 8.25" across and 9.5" tall.  Then there are 5 what appear to be hand colored 2 page plates of different maps of Europe and Asian countries.  Each of the map plates is 24.25" across and 19.25", across the two pages.  Would love any help/assistance anyone can provide out there so that I can provide further details to interested parties.

Below in different font is what an eBayer from Germany whom collects Perthes atlases and seems to have a background in such items had this to say regarding the piece (different font);

"The title says "Kirchenhistorischer Atlas", best English translation I can make: "Atlas over church history". It is complete with 5 maps, showing distribution of Christian religion and details like Episcopal sees throughout different centuries.  The binding seems as original as it can be, keeping in mind, that the publisher did not offer company provided binding and everything was privately bound at that time (it started only 1847/48 with Stieler's Handlatlas offering publishers binding...). The outside title with contents is original."

The atlas is still bound together, but is loose and certainly needs repair attention.  The plates have watermarks around the perimeter of the maps.  I can not tell you if these are the original covers, what repairs have been made as can find nothing to compare this piece to.

There is also mention of Justus Perthes, a famous map maker back in the 1700s.  Do not lead Latin or German, so having a hard time deciphering all that is here, but it appears that some of these maps may be reproductions of ones that Perthes did.

It appears that the book may have belong to H J Ripley (see signature on the front cover's label and Newton Institute stamp inside).  Ripley was a professor at the Newton Institute and a prolific theologian writer.  When closed, the book measures 13-1/8" across and 19.25" tall.  There is no certificate of authenticity that came or that is being provided with this piece.  You be the judge of what this item is worth to you before you acquire, not after it is in your hands.  You might also be interested in this piece that came from the Newton Theology Institution as well and is out in my eBay store;
