Rare Mulberry Childs Tea Set Sugar Box

Charles Meigh ~ Staffordshire, England c1833

This is a scarce miniature lidded sugar box or sucrier, decorated with finely engraved hop berries that look like oriental lanterns hanging from branches and vines. The pattern is shown in both a miniature dinner service and matching tea set in Lorraine Punchards Playtime Pottery and Porcelain from the UK.The covered sugar stands 3-1/2 inches tall with a flower bud finial, and measure 4-1/2 inches across, with moulded handles at each end.

The sugar was made by Charles Meigh, an esteemed pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire potteries region of England in the early part of the 19th century. It is marked with impressed numeral 33 and a transfer printed ‘chop’, a Chinese looking symbol used as a signature by Meigh.

The set is in great condition with an old glazed over chip (original to the making) with a glaze flake on the edge of the foot, and no other chips cracks or repairs. An extremely scarce piece to find piece, a perfect addition to an advanced collection of miniature transferware. A nice example from an early miniature tea set. Offered as is, as shown.
