Pirate Glass

Pirate glass appears black to the naked eye, but when held up to a light source, the color is usually a dark green or amber hue. Sometimes the glass is so dark, it still appears black. This is the rarest of all. Other colors, including purple, and reds are extremely rare, as well. When photographing my listings of pirate glass (aka black glass), it is placed on top of my iphone flashlight or a flashlight. Different metals, including iron oxides, manganese, ash, and other components were added to make the glass darker and stronger, hence the differing colors. Pirate glass mostly comes from glass containers pirates and sailors used to drink rum from dating from the 1700s-1850s.

Sea Glass Origin

The genuine surf-tumbled sea glass I sell was collected from all over the world during the last 30-plus years, some found while living in Hawai'i, Florida, California, New England, N. Carolina, Texas, on ocean-side vacations, and from domestic/international purchases. Also, much of the sea glass I sell is from Davenport Beach, known for some of the most coveted sea glass in the world, because of the unique colorful patterns and shapes. If the exact beach location is known, it's listed in the auction's title.

Is It Real Sea Glass?

Most of the sea glass on eBay isn't genuine surf-tumbled, and there are many sellers taking advantage of their customers. The most in-depth article is below and a short 1-minute video from Beach Combing Magazine. Copy and paste in your browser.
