The Battle of SURABAYA

During the Colonial era, the city was annexed by the Dutch East Indies. During WWII, Surabaya was occupied by Japan. After the Japanese surrender, the city was seized by Indonesian nationalists and that led to a conflict with Great Britain—that had become the caretakers of the Dutch colony.

During October 1945, in the Battle of Surabaya, “Arek—Arak” teenagers killed British Brigadier Aubertin Mallaby. They refused an ultimatum to surrender the city. By November, thousands of lives were lost. Soon afterward, Surabaya became part of Indonesia when it became independent.
